1. Health & Safety Policy Statement
I am committed to complying with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and all relevant statutory provisions. As a sole trader mobile welder, I recognise my duty of care to clients, contractors, and members of the public.
This business will comply with, but is not limited to:
• Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974
• Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
• Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH)
• Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER)
• Work at Height Regulations 2005

2. Responsibilities (Sole Trader)
As a sole trader, I am responsible for undertaking risk assessments, implementing control measures, maintaining safe equipment, ensuring competence, and reviewing this documentation annually or following significant change.
3. General Risk Assessment – Mobile Welding
Risk assessments conducted in accordance with the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
Hot Works
Hazards: Fire, burns, explosion.
Controls: 5m exclusion zone, fire extinguishers, 30-minute fire watch, hot works permit compliance.
Welding Fumes (COSHH)
Hazards: Respiratory disease including occupational asthma and cancer.
Controls: LEV where possible, RPE (minimum FFP3), avoid confined spaces unless assessed.
Work Equipment (PUWER)
Hazards: Electric shock, mechanical failure.
Controls: Pre-use checks, PAT testing, RCD protection, maintenance records.
Manual Handling
Controls implemented in line with Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992.
4. Welding Fume Control & HSE Compliance
In line with HSE Safety Alert (February 2019) regarding welding fume, all welding fume is considered potentially carcinogenic. Control measures are implemented regardless of material being welded.
Control Measures Implemented:
• Avoid welding in enclosed spaces where possible.
• Use Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) where available.
• Use suitable Respiratory Protective Equipment (minimum FFP3).
• Air-fed welding masks used for prolonged or high-risk work.
• Regular inspection and maintenance of RPE.
• Face-fit testing conducted where tight-fitting RPE is used.
• Dynamic risk assessment conducted before each job.
These measures are implemented to comply with COSHH Regulations 2002 and to reduce exposure to airborne contaminants so far as reasonably practicable.
5. Method Statement – Mobile Welding Works
• Report to responsible person and review site rules.
• Conduct dynamic risk assessment.
• Obtain hot works permit where required.
• Establish exclusion zone.
• Set up LEV or confirm ventilation.
• Wear full PPE including RPE.
• Complete welding works safely.
• Undertake 30-minute fire watch.
• Remove equipment and leave area safe.
6. Accident & Emergency Procedure
• First aid kit carried in vehicle.
• Burns cooled with running water for minimum 20 minutes.
• Emergency services contacted via 999 if required.
• Incidents and near misses recorded and reviewed.
